Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) users will now be able to hide mature and suggestive content from their News Feeds. The giant social media platform has been running the test for the new feature, and it seems like the stage is all set. With the increasing demand for flexibility in the use of devices, Facebook says that its intention is to give people more ways to control what they see in News Feed. Those within the test are currently able to see a banner which gives them an option of removing the mature posts or better still have them filtered.
But is deemed as mature content? Apparently, it is the first time that Facebook is giving people the option of blocking mature content from their feeds. However, no one from the company could clearly describe what mature content entailed. But the spokesperson did mention about photos that could be in violation of the company‘s community standards. There has been massive posting of incomprehensible photos on Facebook which if they are not a put-off, they are somewhat disgusting.
There is much more on the Corridors of Facebook
The curation of popular news by Facebook staff for Facebook users has resulted in the elimination of the company’s editors leaving the algorithm to do its job. However, the results have not been anything to smile at. But the company still maintained its grounds that dropping off people from the news module could move its operations to a higher scale.
The trending team which had published a false story about Fox News host Megyn Kelly was fired without notice and in a meeting with a security guard present. A company representative said that its goal is to enable Trending for as many people as possible, but it must be reliable information. The algorithmically driven process is expected to scale Trending to cover more topics while making it available to more people globally.
Apparently, the dismissal of the trending module team has been a long term plan according to sources familiar with the matter. Nonetheless, it seems like the team had not learned from the human editors’ curation decisions.
